A total of 1,036 motorists were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol during special enforcement drives conducted by the Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri traffic police over the past week

Hyderabad traffic police recorded the highest number of cases, booking 475 drivers. In Cyberabad, 293 motorists were booked during the weekend drive, while Malkajgiri traffic police booked 268 motorists during the same period. Police said all offenders would be produced before the respective courts.

The police reiterated that drunk driving remains a serious offence and warned motorists against getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. Officials cautioned that drivers who cause fatal accidents while under the influence of alcohol will be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, dealing with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which carries a maximum punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment along with a fine.

Court disposal data released by the three commissionerates also showed continued legal action against offenders. In Malkajgiri, 142 drunk driving cases were disposed of by courts during the week, with all offenders being fined. In Cyberabad, 173 cases were disposed of, of which four offenders received both a fine and jail sentence, five were awarded a fine along with social service, and 164 were punished with fines alone.
