The Puttur Rural Police arrested two persons on January 19 on the charge of transporting cannabis (marijuana/ganja), and seized 106 kg of the contraband worth ₹53 lakh.

Dakshina Kannada District Police said the Puttur Rural Police, acting on specific information, intercepted a car and a mini goods vehicle at Sajankadi in Paduvannur village on January 19. While they found 100 gm of cannabis in the car, they found 106 kg of cannabis, packed in 73 packets, in the goods vehicle.

Police gave the name of the car driver as P. Rafique, 37, and that of the goods vehicle driver as Abdul Sadique, 37, both residents of Charmadi village in Belthangady taluk.

The accused told the police that they were transporting the cannabis to sell in Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka and Kasargod district in Kerala.

Police have seized the cannabis, two vehicles and two mobile phones from the accused. Puttur Rural Police have registered a case under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

The operation was carried out by a team headed by Sub-Inspector J. Gunapala and comprising Harish, Harshith, Prashanth Rai, Praveen Rai, Bhavit Rai, Nagaraj, Satish, Ramesh, Subramani and Vinod.
