A total of 154 violations were recorded during a special drive, against school autos and vans, carried out by the Central Zone Traffic Police on Wednesday.
Among these, 137 cases were booked for wrong-side driving, nine for drivers operating without the mandated uniform, six for unauthorised persons travelling with drivers, and two for carrying more school children than permitted.
The checks were conducted in the morning hours at multiple points — seven temples in Khairatabad, Sujatha School Line under Abids, Ashok Nagar X Road under Chikkadpally, and Indira Park X Road, under the supervision of the respective traffic police stations.
“During the drive, a school van driver transporting children to Raju Little Flower School was found to be under the influence of alcohol. The van, bearing registration number TS09 UE 1355, was intercepted by staff from Abids Traffic Police Station and the driver’s blood alcohol content was recorded at 181 mg/dL. A case was registered, the vehicle was temporarily seized, and the driver was sent for counselling. He will be produced before the appropriate court,” police said.
“A trend of autos carrying more children than legally allowed came to light during the checks,” he added. In such cases, fines were imposed and vehicles were temporarily detained. The drive also revealed widespread disregard for basic traffic norms, with dozens of drivers flouting uniform rules and riding on the wrong side of the road.
ACP S. Mohan Kumar urged all auto and school van drivers to comply with traffic safety guidelines, ensure their vehicles are fit for school transport, and refrain from endangering children’s lives by driving recklessly or under the influence of alcohol. He also appealed to parents to take an active role in verifying that their children are travelling safely to school.
