16-year-old gets robotic spinal surgery at AIIMS

Bhopal: A 16-year-old was treated at AIIMS Bhopal for severe scoliosis (spinal deformity) using robotic-assisted surgery with intraoperative neuromonitoring. The procedure was covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, according to a press release here on Monday. The patient had an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine that affected posture and balance. A detailed clinical assessment and imaging, AIIMS Bhopal team recommended deformity correction.Preoperative planning involved three-dimensional imaging to map the spine’s curvature and determine optimal levels for instrumentation. During the operation, a robotic arm guided the precise insertion of pedicle screws according to the surgical plan, reducing the risk of malposition.

Continuous intraoperative neuromonitoring tracked nerve function in real time, allowing surgeons to detect and respond immediately to any neural changes.

Once screws were positioned, controlled correction maneuvers realigned the spine and fixation rods were secured.Hospital officials said the combination of robotic assistance and neuromonitoring increased surgical accuracy and safety in a complex procedure where millimetre-level precision is crucial.Since the intervention, patient has shown marked clinical improvement and will receive follow-up rehabilitation.
