A 17-year-old girl's murder and suspected sexual assault have sparked protests in Tamil Nadu's Thoothukudi district, prompting reactions from senior political leaders in the state. The incident took place in Vilaathikulam.
The minor, who was a student of Class 12, had gone missing on Tuesday night. Concerned about the teenager's whereabouts, her family and relatives launched a search for her. However, hours later, they found her body near their home.
Angered by the incident, the public, led by the girl's family, blocked a road and demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits. The police held dialogue with the protestors, assuring them that efforts are underway to arrest those involved in the crime.
Expressing anguish over the incident, Lok Sabha MP Kanimozhi, who is a member of Tamil Nadu's DMK, said the police were "vigorously engaged in the task of tracking down the perpetrators", adding that the culprits would be given the "harshest possible punishment".
"The incident in which a schoolgirl was subjected to sexual assault and brutally murdered near Viyaathikulam has caused widespread shock and grief. Police personnel are vigorously engaged in the task of tracking down the perpetrators of this heinous act. We will stand in support to ensure that those anti-social elements receive the harshest possible punishment, and that the affected student's family obtains the justice they deserve," she posted on X.
Meanwhile, the opposition BJP launched a scathing attack on the DMK, alleging that the party was focused only on the upcoming Assembly elections.
"Is this the state of affairs for a school-going girl? Even reading the news makes my heart race with fear," BJP leader Vinoj P Selvam said in a tweet.
He added, "In Tamil Nadu, women, especially schoolgirls and children, live in an utterly unprotected environment, regardless of their background. The DMK government has failed completely. Yet, to cover up the regime's failures and whitewash their tarnished reputation ahead of elections, the DMK government is resorting to advertisements."
