2 MBBS students drown in Gwalior dam; bodies recovered

Bhopal: Two second-year MBBS students drowned at Tighra dam in Gwalior Saturday evening after reportedly slipping into deep waters while on an outing with friends.The bodies were recovered following an overnight search operation by the administration and SDRF teams.The deceased were identified as Ayush Srivastava, hailing from Muzaffarpur in Bihar, and Gopal Agrawal from Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district, both students of Gajra Raja Medical College (GRMC).According to officials, a group of eight GRMC students, four boys and four girls, had gone to the dam on Saturday evening. The group reportedly moved nearly 3 km away from the boat club to a restricted area.Around 7 pm, Ayush and Gopal entered the water. Eyewitnesses said they lost balance after slipping on the rocky edge and were swept into a 40–50 feet deep section of the dam within seconds.When they failed to return for a long time, their friends began searching for them. Their clothes and shoes were found kept neatly near the edge of the water. Police were immediately informed.A rescue operation was launched by police, SDRF personnel and local divers under the supervision of a senior police officer.Gopal’s body was recovered late Saturday night. Ayush’s body was found around 2 pm on Sunday. Officials said his body was trapped nearly 50 feet deep between rocks and bushes.

Gopal, the youngest among his siblings, had cracked the NEET examination in his first attempt in 2024. Family members said his elder brother had been funding his education and Gopal often spoke about supporting the family after becoming a doctor.
