During the cyclone-induced rains, around 200 workers were caught in floodwater inside a tunnel at Veligonda Project near Kotturu village in Peddadornala mandal of Prakasam district on Tuesday. The project officials have rescued them within few hours.
According to the sources, the heavy inflows of floodwater from the surrounding areas have entered into the tunnel where the workers were involved in lining work. The workers were stuck amid floodwater in the tunnel underground.
As soon as the project officials got the information about the workers trapped in the tunnel, they have launched a rescue operation. The rescue teams have immediately evacuated the workers using the tunnel’s vertical entry shaft and shifted them to Kollam Vagu, downstream of Krishna river.
A senior official of Veligonda Project informed that all workers were brought safely to Sunnipenta and arrangements were made to send them to Srisailam through boats in two batches within few hours.
