Uttar Pradesh police have arrested 22 people accused of taking out a Muharram procession in Prayagraj without official permission. A case has been registered again 40 people, of whom 18 are on the run.

The procession was taken out on Thursday night at around 8 pm in the Sirsa market area of Prayagraj’s Yamunanagar zone, leading to tension in the locality.

Taken out without permission, the procession sparked protests from local traders. A group of shopkeepers, led by trade leader Bhagwan Kesari, gathered at Tal Chauraha to object to the unauthorised event, leading to a brief confrontation between the two groups.

Police teams quickly arrived at the scene to de-escalate the situation.

Following a collective complaint filed by several traders, authorities registered an FIR against 40 people.

So far, 22 people have been arrested in connection with the case. Search operations are ongoing to find and arrest 18 other accused.
