A 25-year-old man from Kalamboli was arrested at the city airport for rushing onto the apron, where planes are parked, in a desperate attempt to board a flight he had just missed.

According to the officials, the man has been identified as Piyush Soni. The officials spotted him running towards the parking area where an Air India flight from Gujarat had landed. The man had arrived at the airport a little after 9.50 am — the deadline for boarding had crossed, said officials of Sahar police station.

Soni was under the impression that his Air India flight to Patna was still at the gate, but it had already departed. In his haste, he rushed towards a different aircraft that had arrived from Bhuj.

Initially, Soni claimed the driver of a ground vehicle had accidentally dropped him near the runway, but airport security officials later debunked this story as a fabrication, the police reported.

According to their complaint, an Air India staffer has stated that they noticed a man running towards a plane, risking flight movement and potentially causing a fatal incident had some aircraft been taking off.

“During the inquiry, Soni revealed that he arrived at the airport late, and the gate had closed. He entered the runway by opening the emergency access between gate 42 and gate 43 from inside and ran towards the plane to board it without knowing which one was scheduled to depart," the police said.

Soni was later handed over to airport security (CISF) officials. He has been booked for endangering lives and offences under the Aircraft Act.
