In a shocking incident, a 25-year-old kabaddi player was shot dead in broad daylight near the office of the Ludhiana (Rural) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Punjab’s Jagraon on Friday, police said.
The deceased, identified as Tejpal Singh, a native of Giddarwindi village near Jagraon, was a national-level kabaddi player. He was walking with two friends on Hari Singh Hospital Road when the incident took place, news agency PTI reported.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident took place when Singh was brutally beaten by a group of five or six assailants. During the scuffle, one of them pulled out a revolver and shot him in the chest.
Singh was rushed to a local hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival, police said.
Police said the killing appears to be linked to an old rivalry. “The accused have been identified, and teams have been dispatched to arrest them," said SSP Ankur Gupta, adding that CCTV footage from the area is being analysed.
Soon after the attack, teams from Jagraon City Police Station reached the spot and began collecting evidence.
