The funeral of former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Akhtar’s brother has sparked controversy after the leaders associated with the political wing of Lashkar-e-Taiba were seen attending it.

Images and a video shared by PMML showed its Islamabad chief Inam-ur-Rehman Kamboh, deputy general secretary Abdullah Toor, zonal general secretary Hafiz Umar and Khidmat Committee chairman Amjad Bhatti among those present at the funeral prayers.

The footage also purportedly showed individuals considered close aides of Hafiz Saeed, the founder of LeT and mastermind of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.

The attendees were seen standing in rows and offering prayers for Shahid Akhtar, who reportedly died of cardiac arrest three days ago, according to Pakistani media reports.

Shoaib Akhtar Announces Brother’s Death

Confirming the loss in a social media post, Shoaib Akhtar wrote, “I’m very saddened to share that my beloved older brother, Shahid Akhtar, has returned to Allah Subhana wa Taala. Namaz-e-Janaza time & place will be informed in the morning."

The former cricketer has not publicly responded to criticism surrounding the presence of PMML functionaries at the funeral.

Fresh Spotlight On Pakistan’s Terror Record

The appearance of members linked to LeT’s political arm at a gathering connected to a well-known public figure has once again fuelled concerns over the visibility and movement of individuals associated with proscribed groups in Pakistan.

India has for years accused Pakistan of allowing terror leaders and networks to operate from its territory and has repeatedly raised the issue at international forums, urging Islamabad to take stronger action against such organisations.
