Debashis Bisoi in police custody
Bhubaneswar: A 26-year-old man, who was arrested on Friday for allegedly killing a 22-year-old caretaker and dumping her body in a water-filled quarry in Khurda’s Tapang district in Jan, suspected the woman, his fiancée, was involved with other men, police said on Saturday.Debashis Bisoi, an electrician from Tamando area, confessed to strangling the woman to death, police said.“The houseowner, for whom the woman worked, lodged a police complaint two days after she went missing. It was a blind case, and we rounded up Bisoi when we studied his behaviour pertaining to switching on the mobile phone of his dead fiancée at intervals to create the impression that she was alive. He did this to mislead police.
But we zoomed in on him and interrogated him,” said police commissioner S Dev Datta Singh.“On Jan 24, Bisoi executed his premeditated plan. He picked her up from her workplace, ostensibly for a day out. After visiting Bapuji Nagar for errands, he took her to a secluded area in Nijigada, Tapang, under the guise of creating reels. There, he strangled her and concealed her body in the quarry, covering it with bushes,” Singh said.
Recovery of the skeletal remains of the woman was conducted in the presence of a forensic team and an executive magistrate. Following post-mortem at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, the remains were handed over to her family members. “Parts of the skeleton will be sent for DNA profiling. We have seized the mobile phones of the woman and her brother from Bisoi,” a police officer said.Call detail records (CDR), evasionary tactics by Bisoi, and possession of the woman’s mobile phone together provide strong evidence against the accused, police said. Attempts made by Bisoi to derail the investigation ultimately led to his arrest, police added.
