Imphal: Three Amur falcons tagged with satellite transmitters were released on Tuesday afternoon at the Chiuluan roosting site in Manipur’s Tamenglong district. The initiative aims to track the migratory routes of these long-distance travellers and bolster conservation efforts.
Amur falcons make an annual stopover in Tamenglong during their journey from Siberia to Africa. The tagging exercise, carried out by the Tamenglong forest division in collaboration with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun, began on Nov 9 and ended with the release of the birds at around 4pm on Tuesday.Of the 10 falcons captured, three were selected for satellite tagging using lightweight 3.5-gram transmitters attached with teflon ribbon.
The male was named Apapang, while the two females were named Ahu and Alang. The release was marked by a short prayer led by Dingsung Gangmei, leader of the Chiuluan village volunteers, wishing the birds a safe migration.Meanwhile, in a bid to protect migratory birds, particularly the Amur falcons, the additional district magistrate of Noney district has imposed a blanket ban on the use of airguns across the district.
