3 arrested for girl’s murder in Kamrup-M

Guwahati: Officers from Khetri police station have arrested three individuals in connection with the murder of a teenage girl in Kamrup (Metropolitan) district. The arrests followed a protest by locals outside the police station, demanding justice for the deceased and calling for the accused to face severe punishment.The girl was a college student. According to police reports, the main suspect, who is from Assam’s Morigaon district, along with two minors, allegedly carried out the attack. The girl’s father had filed a complaint stating that the main suspect had been persistently pursuing his daughter, who had consistently rejected his advances. Enraged by the rejection, the youth, aged 21, allegedly plotted and executed the attack on Sunday with the help of his accomplices before fleeing the scene.“The girl was taken to Sonapur Civil Hospital where she was declared dead. We are currently investigating the matter and are awaiting the post-mortem report to ascertain the cause of death. We found injury marks around her neck,” said Jayanta Kumar Nath, the investigating officer.The main suspect was apprehended on Monday and presented before a local court, which remanded him to four days of police custody for further interrogation. The two juveniles involved were presented before the Juvenile Justice Board and subsequently sent to juvenile homes. The investigation is ongoing to uncover the full sequence of events leading to the crime. “We have registered a case under the relevant provisions of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act pertaining to murder,” the investigating officer stated, adding that more details will emerge as the investigation progresses.
