319 booked for drunk driving this week, 12 sentenced to jail

Cyberabad traffic police booked 319 motorists for drunk driving during a weekend special enforcement drive. Miyapur topped the charts with 41 cases, followed by Shadnagar with 38, and Shamshabad and Rajendranagar with 32 each. Raidurgam reported the lowest with three cases.

Two-wheelers accounted for the majority with 245 cases, followed by 58 four-wheelers, 12 three-wheelers and four heavy vehicles.

Traffic police said that drunk driving is a serious offence, warning that those who cause fatal accidents while under the influence will be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The Section gives up to 10 years of imprisonment along with a fine.

Between August 25 and August 30, a total of 217 drunk driving cases were disposed of by courts. Of these, 205 offenders were fined while 12 were sentenced to jail. One person was jailed for one day, five for two days, three for three days and three for four days. Another 12 persons were assigned social service as part of their punishment.
