Around 32% of candidates in the coming Phase-1 Bihar Assembly polls have declared criminal cases against themselves out of which 27% have serious criminal cases such as murder and crimes against women, according to an analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).
The analysis by ADR and Bihar Election Watch considered the self-sworn affidavits of 1,303 out of 1,314 candidates, who are contesting the Bihar elections phase I.

Out of the 1,303 candidates analysed, 423 (32%) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. While 354 (27%) candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.

There are 33 candidates with cases related to murder and 86 candidates have declared cases of attempt to murder. A total of 42 candidates have declared cases related to crimes against women, out of which two candidates have declared cases related to rape.
As far as political parties were concerned, the CPI(ML) had the largest number of candidates with criminal cases (93%) followed by the RJD (76%) and then the BJP (65%).

Among the major parties, 50 (44%) out of 114 candidates analysed from the Jan Suraaj Party, 18 (20%) out of 89 candidates analysed from the BSP, 53 (76%) out of 70 candidates analysed from the RJD, 22 (39%) out of 57 candidates analysed from the JD(U), 31 (65%) out of 48 candidates analysed from the BJP, 12 (27%) out of 44 candidates analysed from the AAP, 15 (65%) out of 23 candidates analysed from the Congress, 13 (93%) out of 14 candidates analysed from the CPI(ML)(L), 7 (54%) out of 13 candidates analysed from the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), 5 (100%) out of 5 candidates analysed from the CPI and 3 (100%) out of 3 candidates analysed from the CPI(M) have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
