38 Arrested Over 'Beef Head' Incident In Assam’s Dhubri, CM Vows Strict Action Against Culprits

In response to the rising communal tensions following reports of desecration of a Hindu temple in Assam’s Dhubri district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the police have arrested 38 people.

The police have arrested 38 people in an overnight crackdown after the “beef head" incident, Sarma said in a post on X.

The Assam Chief Minister also issued shoot-at-sight orders in the state’s Dhubri district, which borders Bangladesh. During a visit to violence-hit areas, Sarma said the act of throwing a cow’s head near a temple should never have occurred and vowed strict action against those responsible.

In a post on X, Sharma wrote, “I visited Dhubri and directed law enforcement officers to follow ZERO tolerance against elements who desecrate our temples, Naamghars and sacred spaces. The incident of throwing beef at the town’s Hanuman Mandir should have NEVER happened, and those involved WON’T BE SPARED."

He also held a high-level meeting in Dhubri with DGP Harmeet Singh, Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Tiwari, and other senior officials of the state administration.

The Chief Minister stated that Dhubri’s law and order situation had been deteriorating for over a week. The trouble began on June 7, a day after Eid al-Adha, when a cow’s severed head was discovered in front of a Hanuman temple, prompting calls for peace from both Hindu and Muslim communities. Unfortunately, similar incidents, including stone-pelting, recurred the following day.

Sarma also revealed that provocative posters were put up a day before Bakrid by an organisation called ‘Nabin Bangla,’ which expressed intentions to merge Dhubri with Bangladesh. “Such elements are clearly trying to disrupt peace," the CM said.

He said that if required, he would guard the Hanuman Temple for the whole night. “We cannot allow a section of the community to create such disturbances. Our government will not tolerate this and allow Dhubri to go out of our hands," Sarma asserted.

Dhubri District Commissioner Dibakar Nath stated that the situation in Dhubri town is currently under control. “We’ve revoked yesterday’s order, and shops and markets have reopened," he told PTI.
