An earthquake struck inland from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast on Saturday morning, registering 4.9, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, at a depth of approximately 10 km.
Geoscience Australia’s preliminary data places the epicentre near Goomeri, about 260 km northwest of Brisbane, though some earlier reports had it located 80 km west of Noosa. Tremors were widely felt across southeast Queensland, from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast down to the Gold Coast, with over 9,000 felt reports submitted by residents.
The quake caused disruptions to regional rail services, with Queensland Rail operating trains at reduced speeds and delays up to 15 minutes reported. In areas closer to the epicentre, including Murgon, telephone lines were disrupted and approximately 10,000 homes experienced power outages as emergency repairs were underway, reported Courier Mail.
Despite the intensity of the shaking, authorities confirmed there was no tsunami threat, and no significant damage or injuries have been reported so far. More details on the earthquake are awaited.
