Smuggled rare tortoise intercepted from Bangkok by KIA Customs
Bengaluru: Customs officers at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) Wednesday caught a passenger arriving from Bangkok and recovered 47 live specimens from his baggage. They included red-footed tortoise, African spurred tortoise, Argentine black & white tegu and Goeldi’s marmoset.Officials said some of the recovered species are listed under appendix-II of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).A case has been registered under Customs Act, 1962 and the passenger has been handed over to the range forest officer (RFO), Bengaluru Rural, for action under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
