A team of doctors led by gynaecology oncologist at Manur Multispecialty Hospital in Kalaburagi carried out a rare surgery and successfully removed an ovarian tumour weighing around 5 kg from a 52-year-old woman recently.

Director of Manur Multi-Specialty Hospital Farooq Manur and gynaecology oncologist Sumayya Sana, addressing a press conference here on Thursday, said that patient Gurubai consulted doctors after she developed pain and upon investigation it was revealed that the woman had a tumour in her ovary. And, this was exerting pressure on her intestine (intestinal adhesions) causing acute pain.

Elaborating on the case, Dr. Manur and Dr. Sana said that a team of doctors, including gastroenterologist, gynaecologist and anesthetist, operated for four hours and extracted the 5 kg tumour from the woman’s ovary. Extraction of the tumour was a challenge for the team, as the patient had exceptionally low haemoglobin.

Dr. Sana said that ovarian cancer is typically diagnosed only in its advanced stage. Most of the time, it complicates treatment. In this particular case, a delay of a couple of months in diagnosing or treating ovarian tumour could have progressed to Stage 3 ovarian cancer, she added.

Fortunately, the tumour was benign and the patient had no comorbidities which enabled her in her fast recovery. Post-surgery, the patient showed tremendous recovery, Dr. Manur added.
