Days after the Supreme Court issued directives to sterilise aggressive street dogs and release them back on the roads, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Delhi government have identified five different sites within 15 days, where five dog centres having a capacity of upto 3,000, are planned to be built, sources told India Today TV.

The five sites where the shelters are planned are Dwarka Sector-29, Bela Road in Civil Lines, Mundhela Kalan in Southwest Delhi, Ghazipur in East Delhi and Bijwasan in South Delhi, sources said.

The plan includes facilities to house 2,500 to 3,000 stray dogs in Dwarka and on Bela Road. The same range of population will be facilitated by the other three sites.

While the dog centres are being built, the dog population will be housed in Animal Birth Control (ABC) centres. The authorities are also planning separate arrangements for dogs showing symptoms of rabies.

The development follows the Supreme Court order in early August to handle the increasing hostility by street dogs, some resulting in the deaths of children and the elderly people. The directives, asking civic authorities to round up the dogs, sterilise them and indefinitely keep them in dog shelters, prompted heated reactions from the people and animal rights activists.

Only weeks later, the Supreme Court modified its contentious order on street dogs in Delhi-NCR, directing their release to the same area from where they were picked up after vaccination and deworming, drawing praise from activists.
