A 50-year-old woman died after being hit by a speeding car near the Bandra-Worli Sea Link toll plaza, the police said.
The incident took place at around 10 pm on Sunday when the accused, Gurwindersingh Kheer – a 48-year-old resident of Santa Cruz – was returning home that night.
Kheer, who runs a stone crusher plant business, surrendered himself to the authorities after the incident. He was tested and found to be sober; however, his car was impounded by the authorities.
Soon after the accident, the toll plaza staff rushed the woman to Bhabha Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries during treatment, officials said.
She did not have any ID or phone, prompting the police to believe that she may have been homeless. The cops are attempting to ascertain her identity and inform her family about the incident.
Police have registered an FIR under various sections—BNS 106(1) for causing death by negligence, BNS 125 for endangering life, BNS 281 for rash driving, and Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act for dangerous driving. Kheer was issued a notice and later released pending further investigation, according to reports.
