Panaji: Six people from Maharashtra were rescued in two separate incidents along the popular Baga-Calangute coastal stretch during the weekend. Goa’s coastline saw robust footfalls despite the unseasonal showers during the period.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the state until Oct 29, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and wind speeds ranging from 30-40kmph.At Baga beach, four teenagers from Nashik, including three minors, were rescued after they got caught in a rip current. The teens were part of a group of 20 students who had previously ignored the on-duty lifesavers’ instructions not to venture into deep water.“After they were caught in a rip current, all four persons started struggling to stay afloat.
Noticing their plight, lifesaver Suryakant Paryekar initiated the rescue with a rescue board, assisted by supervisor Vinod Gaonkar, Nandakishor, and Jitendra Giri. All victims were safely brought back to shore unharmed.At Calangute, two young men from Sangli, Maharashtra, were saved from drowning after they were caught in a similar rip current. Lifesavers Shivam Rajbhar and Ankur Kumar immediately responded with rescue tubes and successfully brought both victims safely back to shore.
Three children, who went missing in separate incidents at Calangute beach, were reunited with their parents and guardians by Drishti Marine lifesavers. This included a 12-year-old boy from Uttar Pradesh who was spotted entering the water unsupervised. The boy claimed that he travelled alone to Goa from Mumbai.
