Hubballi Jaggalagi Habba, which is celebrated annually during the Holi festival, will have 60 Jaggalagi troupes, including some from neighbouring States, participating in it this time.
Addressing presspersons in Hubballi on Tuesday, MLA Mahesh Tenginakai said that the Jaggalagi Habba will be celebrated on Thursday with a procession commencing at 4 p.m. from Moorusavira Math.
Union Minister Prahlad Joshi will inaugurate the festival. Sri Gurusiddha Rajayogindra Swami of Moorusavira Math will preside over the inaugural event. Several religious heads and dignitaries are expected to attend it.
“The grand procession, accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of over 400 Jaggalagi and other traditional leather instruments, will begin from the Moorusavira Math Grounds. The procession will pass through S.T. Bhandari Road, Victoria Road, Koppikar Road, Bani Oni-Shakti Road, Station Road, Ganesh Peth Circle, Maratha Galli, Shivaji Chowk, Broad Road, Durgadabail Circle, Belgaum Galli, Pandar Galli and Tulja Bhavani Circle before concluding at the Math premises,” Mr. Tenginakai said.
He said that these 60 Jaggalagi troupes are mainly from nearby villages. This year members of the Kumareshwara Yuvaka Mandal’s hunter costume troupe and vibrant puppets from the Swarna Mayuri Gombe troupe will be part of the celebrations.
A tiger dance troupe from Kadubettu in Udupi, a Hanuman-themed troupe accompanied by performers dressed as monkeys and 45 artistes portraying Parameshwara and Narasimha, along with Nandi and Naga sadhus will participate in the procession.
In addition, 50 performers from the Vadhya Sanskar Dolatasha troupe from Ichalkaranji in Maharashtra will participate.
Mr. Tenginakai said that the festival not only promotes folk artistes by giving them recognition but also ensures that traditional culture is passed on to future generations.
