7,716 students to graduate at KSLU’s 7th convocation

Karnataka State Law University (KSLU) will confer graduate and postgraduate degrees to a total of 7,716 candidates of academic years 2022-23 and 2023-24 and award honorary doctoral degrees to two, including a former judge of the Supreme Court of India during its 7th convocation to be held on November 5 in Dharwad.

Addressing a press conference at KSLU in Rayapur of Hubballi on Monday, Vice-Chancellor of KSLU Prof. C. Basavaraju said that former judge of the Supreme Court of India Justice and chairman of Karnataka State Border and River Protection Commission Shivaraj V. Patil would deliver the convocation address at the convocation to be held at Farmers Knowledge Centre of University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad.

Chancellor of the University and Governor of Karnataka Thawar Chand Gehlot will preside over the convocation, and Minister for Law, Justice, Human Rights, Parliamentary Affairs and Legislation and Tourism H. K. Patil will be the guest of honour.

Prof. Basavaraju said that in all 4,053 male candidates and 3,663 female candidates would be conferred their respective degrees and 28 gold medals would be awarded to the toppers. This apart 150 rank holders would be given rank certificates and two candidates would receive doctoral degrees. In addition, 29 candidates would receive cash prizes and seven would receive scholarships, he said.

Honorary doctorates

Prof. Basavaraju said that Governor of Andhra Pradesh and Former Judge of Supreme Court of India Justice Abdul Nazeera and senior advocate of Bengaluru V. Sudhish Pai would be conferred honorary doctoral degrees during the convocation.

To a query, Prof. Basavaraju said that the university had given thrust to research in law, which consequently had resulted in 18 candidates registering for the research. In a span of four months six to eight candidates would be receiving their doctoral degrees, he said.

The Vice Chancellor said that special facilities were being provided to encourage research in law, including financial assistance from the university. Meanwhile, there was good demand for five-year integrated courses like BA LLB, BBA LLB, and BCom LLB, and many students were applying to get admission for the courses, he said.

Grants sought

On development of infrastructure on the campus, he said that the university had sought a grant of ₹ 100 cr for construction of administrative block, library, guest house and canteen and a proposal in this regard had been submitted to the state government.

Prof. Basavaraju said that the student intake had increased from 1,200 to 1,500 and various building works were underway in an area of 39 guntas on the university campus. To a query regarding municipal councillors taking exception to the ongoing works on the university campus, he said that so far they had not received any notice from the Hubballi Dharwad Municipal Corporation.

Registrar KSLU Geeta Koulagi and Dean and Registrar (Evaluation) KSLU Prof. Dr. Ratna R. Bharamgoudar were present.
