7 new corridors proposed to operate Metro services across every route in city

Times News NetworkKanpur: In line with other large cities in the country, especially Delhi, the state government has prepared a plan to run Metro services across every route within the city.

To support this, the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has put forward a possible expansion model.

The proposal sets out seven new Metro Corridors with a combined length of about 83.658 kilometres. Importantly, one corridor will connect Unnao and Kanpur, operating from Unnao to Kanpur through Gumti No.5 and onwards to the Namak Factory Chauraha.Roughly ten days ago, at an all-departments meeting with the chief secretary in Lucknow, UPMRC managing director Sushil Kumar shared the Metro network expansion plan, and said that the initial report for the Comprehensive Mobility Plan, being prepared by RITES Limited, points to strong scope for extending the Metro in the city. This expansion is based on a detailed survey carried out by the UP Metro team over six to seven months, intended to address rising traffic pressure and to offer the city a modern, environmentally friendly transport option. The suggested works include around 59.648 kilometres of elevated track and 24.01 kilometres of underground track. These corridors are planned to link major residential, industrial, educational, and commercial areas, giving passengers a quick and practical way to travel.

UPMRC managing director said that once the state government grants policy clearance, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared. The Kanpur Development Authority has already finalised the DPR for the Barra-8 to Naubasta stretch, and this has been approved by the state government. In a recent meeting with the government, a presentation was delivered on the usefulness of the Metro service and the proposed expansion.
