Aizawl: The already deteriorating condition of the Aizawl-Silchar road has worsened following recent post-monsoon rains, leaving 717 vehicles stranded over the past 24 hours, officials said on Tuesday.As of 8:30am on Tuesday, no truck carrying essential commodities has been able to reach Aizawl, while empty trucks bound for Assam remain stuck. “Altogether, 316 empty trucks heading to Assam and 401 goods-laden trucks en route to Aizawl have been stranded in the last 24 hours due to the deteriorated road conditions,” an official from Kolasib district said.The Sairang-Kawnpui stretch of the national highway, which connects Mizoram to Assam, has again fallen into disrepair.
The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) began repair work on Tuesday, with the Mizoram public works department supplying boulders for the project.Meanwhile, roads leading to Mamit town and onward to Tripura are also in poor condition. The All NGOs Mamit and the commercial vehicles association have threatened an indefinite strike from Oct 16 unless the state govt initiates urgent repairs.Previous appeals for repairs between Oct 4 and 12 went unanswered, prompting the strike deadline.
