Lionel Messi has found himself at the centre of a major legal storm.

The Inter Miami superstar, along with the Argentine Football Association (AFA), is being sued in South Florida for alleged fraud and breach of contract.

At the heart of the case is a $7 million deal signed between AFA and Miami-based promoter VID, which secured exclusive rights to host Argentina’s friendlies against Venezuela and Puerto Rico in October last year.

The Clause That Sparked It All

According to the lawsuit, Messi was contractually required to play at least 30 minutes in each match, unless he was injured.

But when Argentina faced Venezuela at Hard Rock Stadium, Messi didn’t step onto the pitch. Instead, he watched from a private suite, reportedly funded by the promoter.

That decision is now at the centre of VID’s claim that the agreement and the commercial value tied to Messi’s presence were breached.

What complicates matters further is what happened next.

Just a day after missing the Venezuela clash, Messi turned out for Inter Miami CF and scored twice in an MLS fixture. From the promoter’s perspective, that sequence undermines any suggestion that injury kept him out.

Financial Fallout and Venue Chaos

VID also claims it suffered losses exceeding $1 million after the Puerto Rico match was shifted from Chicago’s Soldier Field to a much smaller venue in Fort Lauderdale.

To make matters worse, the company alleges that promised “make-good" fixtures in China for 2026 never materialised.

A Bigger Pattern Emerging?

This isn’t Messi’s first brush with legal trouble over appearances. Just last month, MLS and the Vancouver Whitecaps paid out nearly $329,000 in a settlement tied to promotional claims involving Messi’s absence.

But this case goes a step further, bringing direct fraud allegations against the player himself.

What Happens Next?

From a sporting standpoint, Messi’s camp could argue that load management or fitness concerns justified the decision. But legally, the case hinges on whether contractual obligations were clearly violated.
