Tension gripped Maddur town in Karnataka’s Mandya district after communal clashes erupted during Lord Ganesh idol immersion on Sunday, police said. The violence, marked by stone-pelting allegedly by miscreants from another community, left eight people injured and triggered widespread unrest in the area.

According to police sources, the clashes broke out in Ram Rahim Nagar when devotees were taking part in the Ganesh immersion procession. Youths from both communities reportedly confronted each other, forcing police to step in as the situation spiralled out of control.

Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baladandi rushed to the spot and took charge of the situation. “We have deployed additional forces and clamped prohibitory orders in Maddur to prevent further escalation," a police officer said, adding that Ganesh immersion rituals were later completed under heavy security arrangements.

A large contingent of police personnel has been stationed in sensitive areas, with patrols intensified to deter further flare-ups. Authorities have appealed for calm, warning that strict action will be taken against anyone spreading rumours or disturbing communal harmony. The district administration has also urged both communities to extend full cooperation to law enforcement in restoring peace and normalcy.
