A powerful explosion ripped through a car in a crowded area of Delhi on Monday, resulting in the tragic deaths of eight people and leaving 24 others injured. The terror attack occurred near the capital’s historic Red Fort, specifically outside Gate No. 1 of the Lal Quila Metro Station, a high-security and heavily frequented public area.
Fatalities Confirmed: At least eight individuals were killed in the blast. Reports from the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital confirmed that eight people were brought to the facility deceased.
Injuries: A total of 24 people have sustained injuries, with reports indicating three individuals are in serious condition. Witness accounts describe scenes of absolute panic, confusion, and horror, with the intensity of the blast shaking nearby buildings.
Widespread Damage: The explosion triggered a massive fire, which quickly engulfed and damaged at least three to four other vehicles parked nearby. Multiple fire tenders were rushed to the scene to control the resulting blaze.
Suspect Held: The Delhi Police nabbed one suspect in the blast incident, sources said, adding that a multi-agency investigation has been launched.
NIA Deployed: Following the high-intensity nature of the explosion and the proximity to a national monument and critical public transport hub, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) immediately dispatched a team to the blast site.
Cause: The exact cause of the explosion remains officially unclear. Forensic teams are currently deployed at the site, collecting samples from the car wreckage and the surrounding area to determine the source and nature of the explosive material. An IED blast is suspected.
High Alert: A high alert has been sounded across the national capital territory. Police have implemented increased vigilance and security checks across Delhi-NCR, with reports indicating that neighbouring Uttar Pradesh has also been put on alert.
Security Agencies on Site: Teams from the Delhi Police Special Cell and other central security agencies have cordoned off the area to manage the investigation and secure the sensitive zone around the Red Fort.
Location and Context: The Red Fort Metro Station is a critical transport nexus near Old Delhi’s commercial and tourist district. The evening timing of the blast meant the area was crowded with commuters, shoppers, and visitors, contributing to the high number of casualties. The explosion has prompted an immediate review of security protocols for public spaces and transport infrastructure across the capital.
