A nine-month-old baby died in a dog attack at a home in UK’s Wales.

The incident took place on Sunday at a property on Crossway in Rogiet, near Caldicot, Monmouthshire. According to BBC, the dog has been seized but no arrests have been made.

Gwent Police said in a statement, “We received a report of a dog attack in an address in Crossway, Rogiet around 6pm on Sunday 2 November. Officers attended along with paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service. A nine-month-old baby was pronounced dead at the scene. The dog has been seized and removed from the property."

Chief superintendent John Davies said: “We understand that there will be concerns around this incident, but officers are on scene and will be making further enquiries as the investigation progresses."

The Welsh Ambulance Service said: “We were called today at 6.02pm to reports of a medical emergency in Rogiet, Caldicot.

“We sent one Cymru high acuity response unit, an advanced paramedic practitioner, a duty operations manager and one emergency ambulance. Crews were supported by our hazardous area response team."

Meanwhile, the residents of Rogiet county have expressed disbelief at the death of the child, with the community in shock and trying to come to terms with what had happened, BBC reported.

“It’s a deep and profound sense of shock that such a thing should happen in amidst our quiet community. A baby is a deep source of joy and love and to lose a baby in these circumstances is just awful," Rogiet county councillor Peter Strong told BBC.

A ban was imposed in UK in February 2024 under a change to the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 after 16 deaths by dog bites in 2023.

According to The Independent, over 20,000 dog attacks were reported to police across England and Wales in the 12 months since the introduction of the XL Bully ban, with one force seeing the number increase by more than a third compared to the previous year.
