‘Aayirathil Oruvan 2’ needs Karthi, Selvaraghavan admits premature Dhanush's announcement

Director Selvaraghavan has reiterated that 'Aayirathil Oruvan 2', the much-anticipated sequel to his cult classic, cannot be made without actor Karthi. The first film, which was released over a decade ago starring Karthi, Andrea Jeremiah, and Reema Sen, initially received a lukewarm response but gradually gained immense appreciation, becoming a fan favorite over time.

Due to its growing popularity, questions about the sequel have followed Selvaraghavan in almost every public appearance.

Premature announcement with Dhanush acknowledged

In a YouTube interaction with Gopinath, Selvaraghavan addressed the curiosity surrounding 'Aayirathil Oruvan 2'. He shared that wherever he goes, people ask the same question—when will the sequel happen? He admitted that he had discussed the sequel with Dhanush and they had prematurely announced the project.

However, he emphasized that the story cannot progress without Karthi, as the character he played is integral to the universe of the Cholas and Pandyas that the film explored.

Logistics and scheduling pose major challenges

Selvaraghavan further explained that recreating such a complex historical world requires a committed producer and a full year of schedule availability from the cast. It’s not that he’s unwilling to do the film; rather, he is waiting for the right circumstances.

He clarified that the ambition to make the sequel is very much alive, but it needs the right kind of backing in terms of resources and time.

Advanced technology could ease production hurdles

Interestingly, the director pointed out that the technological advancements of today could make 'Aayirathil Oruvan 2' more feasible than before. With improvements in CGI and the rise of AI tools in filmmaking, the production costs would be significantly lower now compared to when the original film was made. Selvaraghavan concluded by saying his passion and desire for the sequel remain strong, and he’s hopeful that the project will materialize under the right conditions.
