RTI activist Snehamayi Krishna has lodged a formal police complaint following the tragic deaths of 11 people outside Chinnaswamy Stadium near the Vidhan Soudha in Bengaluru during the RCB victory celebrations.
On Thursday, Krishna submitted the complaint at Cubbon Park Police Station, calling for legal action against Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and officials of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). The charges relate to alleged negligence that led to the deadly stampede.
Krishna, a key complainant in the MUDA land allotment scam involving Siddaramaiah and his wife, accused the state government in his complaint of using the RCB victory event for political publicity while ignoring essential safety measures.
The complaint also questions the ethics of publicly celebrating a team associated with an alcohol brand, suggesting the entire event was planned to promote RCB’s IPL win.
The stampede which took place on Wednesday when thousands gathered near Chinnaswamy Stadium for RCB’s victory parade, celebrating their first-ever IPL title win after 18 years. The team had defeated Punjab Kings in the final in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.
The chaos began after RCB announced the parade through a social media post on Wednesday morning. Confusion over free passes, overcrowding, and limited seating at the stadium reportedly triggered panic. Police sources say many people without valid entry tickets attempted to rush in alongside those with tickets, leading to a stampede that killed 11 and injured over 30 others.
Footage from the scene showed fans struggling to breathe, panicking, and trying to help each other in the crush.
Further controversy has emerged after internal communication, accessed by CNN-News18, revealed that the celebration at Vidhan Soudha was planned well before the IPL final, contradicting the government’s claim that the event was a last-minute decision.
Bengaluru Police had reportedly raised concerns about holding such a large event at the Vidhana Soudha, but the plan went ahead regardless.
So far, 11 FIRs have been registered in connection with the unnatural deaths. The Karnataka government has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased and pledged free medical treatment for those injured.
