Activists, under the banner of the Government Schools’ Development Forum, staged a demonstration in front of the district administrative complex in Kalaburagi on Wednesday, seeking immediate appointment of teachers in government schools.
Speaking at the protest, Gururaj Kudala Hangaraga, activist, criticised successive governments for encouraging privatisation of education instead of developing government schools.
“B.R. Ambedkar always emphasised that education is the key to liberating Dalits from exploitation and oppression. Unfortunately, successive governments have continued to neglect the public education system. Instead of strengthening government schools, where children from poor and marginalised communities study, the focus is shifting toward privatisation. Undermining government schools by starving them of infrastructure and teaching staff is effectively denying education to the underprivileged,” he said.
Following the protest, the activists submitted a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister at the office of the Deputy Commissioner. Their demands included immediate filling of all vacant teaching posts; including subject-specific teachers in government schools; formation of an action committee to ensure quality education, and provision of basic infrastructure such as classrooms, benches, electricity, drinking water, toilets, libraries, and sanitary pads for girls.
