The Tamil Nadu police on Tuesday confirmed that bomb threat emails were sent to the residences of actors Rajinikanth and Dhanush in Chennai. The messages, claiming that explosives had been planted at their homes, were received by the state Director General of Police (DGP) on Monday.

According to the Teynampet police, whose jurisdiction covers the actors’ residences, the first email threatening Rajinikanth was received around 8.30 am on Monday.

After receiving the email, the Teynampet police went to Rajinikanth’s house for a security check with a bomb detection and disposal squad. However, the actor’s security informed them that no unidentified person had entered the house to place the explosive, so it must be a hoax.

“When we reached out, we were told that they do not require the assistance of a bomb squad," news agency PTI reported, citing a police official.

A second email was received later in the evening, around 6.30 p.m., but Rajinikanth’s team again declined a security inspection. Similar threats were sent to actor Dhanush on the same day. “He, too, refused our assistance," the official added.

Police said that several prominent individuals have received comparable threat emails in recent weeks. The Cyber Crime wing has initiated an investigation to trace the origin of the messages. “The Cyber Crime police are tracing those emails, but the probe is still underway," the official added.

Earlier on October 2, emails were sent to the DGP claiming that bombs had been placed at the offices and residences of several VIPs, including at Trisha Krishnan’s home in Teyanampet and Sekher’s in Mandaveli.

On October 9, police arrested a 37-year-old man for making a threat call to police about planting a bomb at actor and Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay’s Neelankarai residence.
