In view of the recent stampede outside Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium in Bengaluru that killed 11 people, the Karnataka government will introduce a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for major events, meetings, and celebrations to prevent any unfortunate incidents, state Home Minister G Parameshwara announced on Thursday.
Parameshwara stated that the government would take strict measures to identify the lapses that led to the stampede during the RCB team’s IPL victory celebrations. Reportedly, 11 people lost their lives and 56 were injured in the incident. Among the injured, 46 have been treated and discharged, while 10 remain in the hospital with non-serious conditions, according to doctors.
To prevent such incidents in the future, the government and the home department will develop a new SOP, Parameshwara was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. He also emphasised that all future mega events, meetings, and celebrations must adhere to the guidelines set by the police department.
Stressing the importance of avoiding such tragedies in the future, the Karnataka Home Minister noted that many of the deceased were young people aged 20-25 who came to celebrate and did not expect to lose their lives. The government will take strict measures to identify and address any lapses.
Parameshwara also noted that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a meeting and ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident, led by the Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner. He assured that strict action would be taken against those found responsible for any lapses, refraining from further details due to the ongoing inquiry.
