In his latest post on X (formerly Twitter), Bhatia stated, "Instead of hanging your head in shame that 415 million people in India survive on $3.10/day [approx. Rs 265/day], you brag about being the world's 4th largest economy. Shame on you."

This direct accusation aimed at India's celebratory mood over its economic ranking quickly went viral, prompting a wave of indignant responses from Indian users.

Many netizens reacted strongly, accusing Bhatia of being out of touch with the ground realities in India and using outdated or misleading data. One user wrote, “If you love America so much, why bother about India? I’ll tell you why. You just want to feel important and get engagement. Hotmail is probably the only thing you did in life. Now you pretend as if you will reform India. You should be the one hanging your head in shame. Dollars lured you away.Others pointed out that India’s economic growth should be acknowledged alongside its challenges, rather than dismissed outright. “Deeply Disappointed in You, Mr. Sabeer Bhatia There was a time when every Indian proudly took your name a tech visionary, a success story we celebrated across. But today, with one careless, cynical statement, you’ve let down the very country that once celebrated you. India rises to become the 4th largest economy in the world, it is not just about numbers — it’s about resilience, aspiration, and collective progress of 1.4 billion people. And so consumed you are that u choose to mock a nation that gave you your roots? “This is what is SHAMEFUL” Just to let you know your words don’t define us. Our spirit does,” posted another user.
