In the weeks since Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi from Indore had first “gone missing” in Meghalaya on May 23, there has been scrutiny on the state
The Meghalaya Police on Tuesday said FIRs have been registered against people who allegedly made “false propaganda” against residents of the state in the aftermath of the Indore honeymooner’s murder.
In the weeks since Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi from Indore had first “gone missing” in Meghalaya on May 23, there has been scrutiny on the state, ranging from suggestions that the two were victims of a crime by locals to questions on whether the state is safe for tourists. However, on Monday, police said Raja was killed by hitmen hired by Sonam and a man she was in a relationship with.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said, “There are some people who have given communal statements against the local people here. We have taken that into cognizance because there are people from here studying outside, and some have said ‘let us harm the local community outside’. We have taken a suo motu case against this person. Another FIR has also come against such people who have made false propaganda.”
Multiple ministers from Meghalaya have also spoken against what they alleged was “an attack on the image of Meghalaya”.
“It is clearly a case that involved a love triangle. It is also a case where the main accused had engaged contract killers in order to carry out a heinous crime. So, the state and the people of Meghalaya today stand vindicated… The role of a section of the national media has also come to the attention of the state government. They have been running a media trial over the past week, and in fact, some of the immediate families of both the accused and the victim have used very defamatory language against Meghalaya. There were also instances where they had gone to the extent of inciting people to take revenge against the people of Meghalaya,” said state Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh.
“The state government has, through the police, already registered FIRs. We will also move through legal means to ensure that all these perpetrators of the attack on the image of Meghalaya will be brought to book,” he said.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong also referred to the matter, calling it “hurtful”.

“From the government’s side, we were so deeply hurt when we saw so many comments made on social media and the national news, which treated Meghalaya as a den of criminals… But we have already told you that Meghalaya is very safe. Our police force is one of the best in the country. We have proved it,” he said.
