Agra Lawyer Arrested For Assaulting Gang Rape Survivor; Breaks Leg While Trying To Escape

A lawyer in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a gangrape survivor at a city hotel. The accused, identified as Jitendra Singh, reportedly represented one of the accused in the survivor’s earlier 2022 sexual assault case. 

According to police, the 24-year-old woman from Auraiya had travelled to Agra for a court hearing when Singh invited her on the pretext of discussing a settlement.

The survivor alleged that Singh offered her alcohol during their journey and later assaulted and raped her inside a hotel room. Following the complaint, police registered a case under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and began a manhunt to trace the accused.

Accused attempts escape, fractures leg

When police raided Singh’s residence, he reportedly attempted to escape by jumping from the terrace of his neighbour’s house. The attempt failed, leaving him with a fractured leg. He was subsequently apprehended by officers and taken into custody.

Officials stated that the accused was provided with immediate medical treatment before further legal proceedings were initiated. “The accused is under police custody, and necessary legal action is being taken," a senior police officer said.

The incident has sparked outrage in Agra’s legal and civil society circles, with activists demanding strict action and disciplinary measures against the accused lawyer. Legal experts have called for a review of ethical conduct among practising advocates, stressing that such cases erode public trust in the justice system.

Authorities have assured that the investigation will be conducted transparently and that the survivor will receive legal and psychological support.
