Agriculture Department officers conducted a raid at Seegodu village in Koppa taluk of Chikkamagaluru district along with the police on Thursday and seized bags of chemical fertilizers being transported illegally.
The officers conducted the raid at Subhash Nagara of Seegodu, where they found a truck carrying 220 bags of urea along with 79 other bags inside a go-down. The loading of the stock was under way when the officers reached the spot.
Sujatha H.L., Joint Director of the Agriculture Department in Chikkamagaluru, stated that the officers seized the goods and assessed the value of the stock at ₹5 lakh. The seized stock had been kept in the Primary Agricultural Credit Society at Balehonnur. The samples have been collected to ascertain the quality of the product.
The police seized the truck and took its owner, Wilfred Lobo, into custody. Based on a complaint filed by Thimmana Gowda S. Patil, Assistant Director of the vigilance wing of the Agriculture Department, Balehonnur Police registered a case.
Ms. Sujatha said that the department was committed to providing quality chemical fertilzers to farmers. Similarly, they would take strict action against those who engage in illegal storage or transportation of fertilizers, she added.
