Daily passenger traffic on the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro has increased from around 35,000 to about 1.5 lakh over the past three years, according to official data.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the metro service up to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar on January 11 as part of Ahmedabad Metro Rail Phase-2. The extension has added direct metro connectivity between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

More than 11.50 crore passengers travelled on the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro between October 2022 and December 2025. In 2023, monthly ridership ranged between 12 lakh and 27 lakh passengers. In 2024, the figure increased to 27–35 lakh passengers per month. In 2025, monthly ridership crossed 44 lakh passengers.

With the latest extension, Mahatma Mandir Metro Station has direct connectivity to Gandhinagar Railway Station. The metro network now provides access to Akshardham Temple and Dandi Kutir. The extension is expected to be used by employees, students and daily commuters, including visitors attending national and international programmes at Mahatma Mandir and students of Kadi Sarva Vishwavidyalaya.

Passenger numbers increased during large events such as IPL matches, international cricket matches and the Rath Yatra, when monthly ridership rose from 1.6 lakh to 2.1 lakh. During the Coldplay concert held at Motera Stadium on January 25 and 26, 2025, a total of 4.11 lakh passengers travelled by metro, officials said.

With the completion of Phase-2, the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation has expanded the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro network to 68 km with 53 stations. Officials said the extension up to Mahatma Mandir is expected to reduce the use of private vehicles and traffic congestion.
