GORAKHPUR: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Gorakhpur, has approved several new academic programmes, marking a significant step towards academic expansion, advanced medical training, and strengthening research at the institute, during its 8th meeting of the Standing Academic Committee.During the meeting, approval was granted for DM in neurology, DM in pain medicine, DM in clinical pharmacology and DM in critical care medicine under the department of anaesthesia, pain medicine & critical care. post-doctoral certificate courses (PDCC) were approved in trauma anaesthesia, spine trauma, pelvic-acetabular surgery, and adolescent gynaecology. Several of these courses, including PDCC in adolescent gynaecology, are the first of their kind in India.Similarly, a post-doctoral fellowship in maternal-foetal medicine under the department of obstetrics & gynaecology was approved. The MS in trauma surgery under the department of trauma & emergency medicine, PhD in Nursing, MSc in nursing psychology, and a BSc in operation theatre technology were also sanctioned.Chairman of academic committee, Ashoka Jahnavi Prasad, mentioned the rising cases of student suicides across institutions and stressed the urgent need for providing sustained psychological support and preventive interventions within the institute. He emphasized that initiating dedicated courses such as MSc in nursing psychology will strengthen the mental health workforce and ensure greater accessibility of psychological care to students and the community at large.
