Four months after the Air India Flight 171 crash that claimed 260 lives, including crew members and passengers, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson described the tragedy as “devastating" for everyone involved.

Speaking at a conference in New Delhi on Wednesday, Wilson said the airline continues to extend full support to the victims’ families and staff affected by the disaster.

“The plane crash in June was devastating for people, families, and the staff involved," Wilson said. “We have been doing everything possible to support those affected and ease their journey forward."

Interim report rules out technical faults

Wilson also referred to the interim investigation report, which suggested that there were no apparent issues with the aircraft, its engines, or Air India’s operational procedures. “We obviously, as with everyone else, await the final report, and if there’s anything to learn from it, we will," he added.

Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8, crashed on 12 June, shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad. The aircraft lost thrust when both engines unexpectedly shut down moments after leaving the runway. Only one person survived.

Ongoing investigation

Early findings from investigators revealed that both fuel cut-off switches were inadvertently moved to the “off" position, leading to catastrophic engine failure. The switches are designed to prevent accidental activation, yet in this instance, they were somehow engaged during climb-out. Investigators are examining cockpit procedures and crew actions to determine whether human error, design flaws, or procedural lapses were involved.

Legal challenges

In the aftermath of the tragedy, lawsuits have been filed alleging that the aircraft’s fuel switch design contributed to the fatal shutdown. Families of the victims are seeking compensation, while regulators and Air India have initiated reviews of technical systems and pilot training protocols.

Wilson reaffirmed that Air India remains committed to cooperating fully with investigators and prioritising safety improvements. “If there is anything that can be learned to prevent such an event from happening again, we will implement it," he said.
