Air India Crash Probe Nearing Closure? Investigators Signal Report Within Two Months

A year after the Air India 171 crash, AAIB says the probe is on track, may take two more months, could issue a status report, and vows full public disclosure of findings

The disastrous Air India 171 crash completes a year today; however, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau will take another two months to submit the final report, according to India Today.

According to the report, the investigation is on the right track, and the official sources have assured that “nothing will be kept in the dark" and that all the findings will be put in the public domain.

The investigators are aiming to submit a comprehensive final report, according to India Today. The official said that they will disclose all aspects of the investigation after the process is complete.

‘Nothing Will Be Kept In Dark’

“Nothing will be kept in the dark. All details will be brought into the public domain," said the official, while speaking to India Today.

Dismissing media reports around the investigation, the officials confirmed that some of the speculation “doesn’t hold any ground."

According to the report, GE Aerospace – whose engines stand at the centre of the investigation – has not raised any objections.

The investigation progress is being regularly reviewed by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, and top officials are being briefed regularly on the progress and preparation of the final report.

The ministry, however, has maintained distance from any sensitive details or internal findings emerging from the investigation, as per the report.

AAIB To Release Status Report Before Final Findings?

According to the report, AAIB is considering releasing a status report before the final findings are made public.

The officials have clarified that AAIB does not have any international obligation under International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) norms, which require investigators to issue such an interim update.

An official also pointed to the ongoing US-Iran war as a factor derailing the pace of the investigation.

On June 12, 2025, Air India flight AI 171, flying from Ahmedabad to London, crashed 32 seconds after takeoff. The aircraft struck student hostels at B J Medical College, killing 241 of the 242 people on board, along with 19 people on the ground.

A preliminary report released last year stated that the Boeing 787’s engine fuel control switches moved almost simultaneously from “RUN" to “CUTOFF," leaving both engines deprived of fuel moments after the aircraft took off.
