Traffic through the District Court bridge in Alappuzha town will be prohibited from July 22 onwards in connection with the bridge reconstruction.

Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB) officials said that a trial run of the traffic regulations will be conducted on July 22 and 23. After the trial run, full-scale traffic restrictions will come into effect from July 24.

Traffic diversion

To enter the town from Thanneermukkom side on the Alappuzha–Thanneermukkom road, vehicles, including KSRTC and private buses, should take a diversion at Kaichoondi Mukku by turning right, then proceed along the AS Canal East Bank road, cross Vazhicheri bridge and turn left at Vazhachira market junction. From there, vehicles should continue via Pichu Iyer–AVJ junction, turn left at Pazhavangadi junction, and reach the KSRTC bus stand via police outpost route.

Vehicles heading from Alappuzha towards Thanneermukkom should take the northern approach road of Chungam–Kallupalam road, proceed along the Commercial Canal North Bank road, turn right after crossing the Iron bridge, then continue via YMCA bridge and AS Canal East Bank road to reach Kaichoondi Mukku.

Vehicles to and from the Ernakulam side will also be redirected. Vehicles coming from Ernakulam can enter the town by crossing Vazhicheri bridge, turning left at Vazhicheri market junction, proceeding via Pichu Iyer–AVJ junction, turning left again at Pazhavangadi junction, and reaching the KSRTC bus stand via police outpost route.

Vehicles heading towards Ernakulam should take the northern approach road of Chungam–Kallupalam road, proceed along the Commercial Canal North Bank road, turn right after the Iron bridge, and then turn left at the YMCA junction to continue their journey.

Vehicles to and from Punnamada should use the deviation road located to the east of police outpost.

As part of the new bridge construction, the existing structure across Vada canal will be dismantled. Meanwhile, reconstruction work is progressing. KRFB officials said that 15% of the new bridge had been completed. “Of the total 168 piles, construction of 56 has been completed and pile cap work is also in progress,” said a KRFB official.

Once completed, the new bridge will be 90 m long and 60 m wide. It is expected to ease traffic congestion in Alappuzha town. The project, funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board, is being implemented at a cost of ₹120.52 crore.
