The Los Angeles Rams are once again navigating uncertainty on their offensive line, as starting left tackle Alaric Jackson has been diagnosed with blood clots for the second time in his career.
NFL Insider Ian Rapoport broke the news, stating, "Rams OT Alaric Jackson, a key member of the O-line who just signed an extension, is dealing with blood clots once again, per The Insiders. Similar to what he had in 2022. While the belief is he’ll play in 2025, there are still questions. That explains the DJ Humphries signing."
Are the Rams facing a major blow with Alaric Jackson’s recurring medical condition?
Alaric Jackson’s latest diagnosis is eerily similar to the one that prematurely ended his 2022 season, when he was placed on injured reserve on November 16 due to a previous case of blood clots.
While optimism remains that he’ll return in 2025, there’s no definitive timetable on how much time he might miss.
The news couldn’t have come at a more unexpected time. Just a few months ago, in February, Jackson inked a three-year, $57 million contract extension with the Rams. That deal came on the heels of two impressive seasons where Jackson, once an undrafted free agent, seized the starting role from Joe Noteboom and solidified himself as the long-term successor to Andrew Whitworth.
His partnership with Steve Avila on the left side had blossomed into one of the most reliable tackle-guard tandems in the league.Unfortunately, the Rams now have to pivot. The recent additions of veteran D.J. Humphries and David Quessenberry point to a sense of urgency within the organization. The team is also evaluating depth with AJ Arcuri, KT Leveston, Warren McClendon Jr., and Trey Wedig, all expected to compete for either the starting left tackle job or backup roles, depending on Jackson’s recovery.Jackson’s absence will undoubtedly impact the Rams' run game, particularly the performance of rising star Kyren Williams. Jackson’s dominance up front was a major reason Williams notched back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons. With his contract extension negotiations already underway, this development adds a new layer of complexity. His value, especially as a pass blocker, becomes even more vital if Jackson remains sidelined.Quarterback Matthew Stafford, while refraining from diving into contract specifics, didn’t hold back in his admiration for Williams. “I'm hesitant to talk about anybody else's business… I love having him as a teammate, love him and I respect the way he plays and goes about his business.”As the Rams brace for 2025, they appear to be in a holding pattern at left tackle. Jackson’s health remains the biggest question mark, and how they respond could influence multiple personnel decisions across the roster. One thing is clear: his presence on the field has become invaluable—and the Rams will need to prepare for all outcomes. Also Read: Hailee Steinfeld gives first clear look at massive engagement ring after secretive romance with Josh Allen
