 ‘Jump’, dares hubby, woman leaps off 2nd floor; survives

AGRA: Tormented physically and mentally for years over dowry, a panic-stricken woman flung herself from the roof of their second-floor house after her husband allegedly tortured her and menacingly ordered her to "jump".

Archana, 35, luckily survived the fall, but suffered several fractures and is recovering in hospital.Though the incident happened on Aug 1 at Daunkoli village in Gonda block of Aligarh district, a 38-second video recorded by a neighbour surfaced on Tuesday evening, following which police registered a case against five members of her in-laws' family, including her husband. Gaunda SHO Manoj Kumar said a case under the Dowry Prohibition Act was registered against the accused, who are absconding.

After the medical report of the woman is received, we will know what kind of injuries she sustained. A team of police was also pressed to arrest the accused. Iglas DSP Mahesh Kumar said, "Preliminary investigation suggests that the woman took the step following a dispute between the husband and wife. The woman is being treated at a govt hospital."Archana's brother Ankit Kumar, a resident of Sabhapur village under Khair police station, alleged that his sister was harassed over dowry since her marriage six years ago. Her husband, Sonu Singh, 40, his father Prempal and mother Nehni Devi, his brother Pramod and wife Durgesh Devi have been demanding additional dowry of Rs 5 lakh and a Bullet motorcycle, said Ankit. Even after Archana gave birth to a son and a daughter, there was no change in their behaviour towards her, added Ankit.
