Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his fiancee, former news anchor Lauren Sanchez, are celebrating their wedding in true luxury, with a multi-day, star-studded affair on the romantic canals of Venice, Italy. The event, which kicked off from Thursday, is reportedly costing over $50 million and has been dubbed the “Wedding of the Century."

The couple are staying at the ultra-luxurious Aman Hotel, a 16th-century palazzo on the Grand Canal overlooking the iconic Rialto Bridge.

Bezos and Sanchez are expected to exchange vows on Friday in a black-tie ceremony at a stunning open-air amphitheatre on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, just across from St Mark’s Square.

A Lavish Affair

The wedding ceremony will include a special performance by Matteo Bocelli, son of opera legend Andrea Bocelli. Guests will then be treated to a gourmet dinner prepared by Michelin-starred chef Fabrizio Mellino.

The cake is crafted by renowned French pastry chef Cédric Grolet. Sanchez is also rumoured to have 27 different outfits prepared for the celebrations.

According to reports, five of Venice’s most exclusive hotels — including the Cipriani and the Aman — have been entirely booked to accommodate the estimated 200–250 high-profile guests. The Aman also famously hosted George Clooney’s wedding to Amal Alamuddin in 2014.

Wedding cost

The wedding festivities are expected to cost between €40 million and €48 million ($47–56 million), according to Luca Zaia, president of Italy’s Veneto region. However, Italy’s tourism ministry estimates the overall economic impact could reach €957 million ($1.12 billion) — with nearly €900 million attributed to global media attention alone.

Direct and indirect spending related to the event is also significant, including €28.4 million on venues and hotels, and €17.6 million on transport and other services.

A-List Guest List

A flood of celebrities has arrived in Venice to celebrate with the couple. Early guests included Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, followed by a starry crowd: Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, Orlando Bloom, Tom Brady, Queen Rania of Jordan, Usher, Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Kris Jenner, and fashion icon Domenico Dolce of Dolce & Gabbana.

Charity Donations

As part of the celebrations, the couple donated €3 million to local institutions in Venice. Each of the following received €1 million: CORILA, an academic group studying the lagoon ecosystem, UNESCO’s Venice office, and Venice International University.
