Daniil Medvedev finally ended an 882-day wait for his 21st ATP Tour title on Sunday, defeating Corentin Moutet 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in the Almaty Open final.
The 29-year-old Russian had last lifted a trophy at the Italian Open in May 2023 and had suffered six final defeats since, including heartbreak at the U.S. Open and Australian Open.
“It continues my funny story of 21 titles in 21 different cities," said Medvedev, reflecting on his career milestone.
A Battle of Nerves
The match was a test of patience and resilience. Medvedev, ranked 14th, struggled with unforced errors early, firing 13 in the first two sets while Moutet kept mistakes to just four. The Frenchman, chasing his first ATP title at 26, kept the pressure high, but Medvedev’s three aces in the decider and clutch serving helped him prevail.
“I was not super happy with how I played in some moments of the match, but to win feels amazing. In the most important points I played good," Medvedev said.
From Struggles to a Comeback
This victory comes after a rough stretch for Medvedev, including early exits in Melbourne, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and Flushing Meadows this year. Post-US Open, he teamed up with new coaches Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, reaching the semis in Beijing and Shanghai.
The Almaty win also boosts his ATP Finals hopes, moving him up three spots to 12th, just 875 points shy of the final qualifying spot.
Closing Out in Style
After two tight sets, Medvedev broke Moutet at 4-3 in the decider and served out the match. “The last game was incredible and I am happy to win the title," he said.
For Moutet, it was another close call — the third final loss of his career after Doha 2020 and Mallorca 2025.
Medvedev will now set his sights on the ATP 500 in Vienna, aiming to carry this momentum forward.
