Thai police have arrested an Australian man in connection with the murder of a 17-year-old girl whose body was found stuffed inside a suitcase near a railway track in the resort city of Pattaya.

The suspect, a man in his 40s, was arrested at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport on Friday as he was allegedly preparing to leave the country. He was taken back to Pattaya for questioning.

The teenager had been reported missing by her friends just hours before the arrest.

According to investigators, CCTV footage showed the girl entering the Australian man’s hotel hand-in-hand during the early hours of Thursday. Later footage captured the suspect leaving the hotel alone while dragging a large suitcase that appeared to be unusually heavy.

Police said surveillance cameras later tracked the man loading the suitcase onto a motorcycle and travelling to an area near a railway line, around 10 minutes from the hotel.

Emergency responders subsequently recovered the teenager’s body from inside the suitcase at the location. She was found naked and had suffered severe injuries to her face, prompting investigators to treat the case as a homicide.

Authorities said scratches found on the suspect’s body indicate the victim may have fought back before her death. However, the Australian man has denied killing the teenager.

In addition to the murder investigation, police have accused the suspect of taking the minor “for the purpose of committing indecent acts", according to local media reports.

The investigation is continuing as forensic experts examine evidence recovered from the hotel room and the crime scene.

Under Thai law, a murder conviction can carry the death penalty or life imprisonment
